the brief
The ancient market town of Clitheroe is situated in the picturesque Ribble Valley
and is a thriving tourist attraction with lots of shops, restaurants and places to stay.
In the heart of the town is a haven of shops and businesses situated round a large
courtyard which for many years had been underutilised. Ian Lloyd, who manages
the rental of the shops in Swan Courtyard, was keen to make greater use of the
space both to attract more trade and to enhance the desirability of the outlets.
the solution
He was also keen to find a supplier that was able to manage the whole project from
start to finish and provide commercial grade products. Mike Doxey, from innfresco,
explained that not only was inn fresco able to supply one of the best most
robust parasols in the marketplace – the StorMax – they were also able to manage
all the installation, the fitting of any heating and lighting equipment and supply
tables and chairs if required.
The result is that the courtyard has been fitted with 2 StorMax parasols. The
StorMax is a great all year round commercial parasol which can stay up for the
whole year if necessary but can also be closed if required. It is very robust and can
withstand the harshest of environments so requires very little maintenance.
For Swan courtyard the installation of the parasols has been great. The shops are
now able to offer their customers seating under the protection of the parasols and
the StorMaxes have provided a great talking point for this lovely little town.
Ian says
I am delighted that we took the plunge and invested in installing the
parasols in the courtyard. It has made the area a really attractive place to
come and have a quite drink and then wander around the array of shops in
the courtyard. The fact that inn-fresco was able to install it all for us as well
was just the icing on the cake!

the brief
Business partners Matt Riley and Alex Haycraft own Runcorn brewery
and wanted to go one step further and open a bar. Premises were found
at the previously named Donato and Sandro’s restaurant in a busy part
of Chester. It needed a complete refurbishment but it had great potential
with a large outside area just ready to be developed. The guys wanted to
create a relaxed atmosphere where customers could just drink or eat
and and enjoy the outside area.
the solution
The key requirements for the outside area were to create a relaxed stylish
image that was attractive to passing trade and would have longevity and
low maintenance. The perfect solution was to install two StorMaxes. The
StorMax is a great all year round commercial parasol which can stay up
for the whole year. The PVC covers are easy to clean and can be installed
with heating and lighting.
The PVC covers come in several colours and so, in keeping with the
atmosphere, the owners chose deep purple. Oak tables have been
installed to make a relaxed seating area and with heating and lighting the
outside area will be able to be used right through the autumn.
Situated in the middle of Chester it is also very busy but the railings
around the site give a really secluded feel allowing customers to watch
the world go by as they eat and drink at the bar.

Case Study – Helping children to play outdoors whatever the weather

Inn-fresco has recently installed a terrace cover at a village school in the Goole area. The school had very good facilities but wanted to develop the schools early years learning provision. Alongside this they also wanted a flexible product which could be used by the whole school for protection from the sun but also allowing children to get some fresh air even on rainy days.

The Solution

The Head Teacher had previously seen some designs and products from other suppliers but, on visiting the inn–fresco showroom felt the Med terrace cover met all their requirements. The Med is a fixed framed structure with a PVC retractable fabric roof which retracts in an attractive concertina style. With front and side blinds it can provide a totally enclosed room but on sunnier days can have one or all of the sides open to provide a shaded area but still allow a cool summer breeze in. This was perfect for the school as it enabled the teacher to schedule outside play whatever the weather and it has also provided a useful extension of the classroom even in colder months.

Heidi Whyley, the head teacher of Airmyn Primary School said

‘’We are delighted with the installation of the Med. It has made a real difference to the school as it is really important for children to play and enjoy the outdoor environment. We did look at other products but nothing provided the flexibility that the Med does and the children love it too!

Extend your classroom and bring the outside in

In recent years there has been a real emphasis on encouraging children to play outdoors. It allows them to let off steam and enjoy the world outside helping them to develop their senses, nurturing creativity and imagination and Ofsted have played a major role in encouraging this. Inn-fresco the outdoor solution specialists have, in recent years, worked with many schools and nurseries to develop their outdoor areas with covered solutions so that they can enjoy the outdoor environment whatever the weather.

Clean up your act

This June politicians, from the 3 main parties, joined forces in support of the Save Our Pubs and Clubs campaign to review the smoking ban. The event marked the fourth anniversary of the ban in England and views on its impact remain as diverse as ever. Whilst many in the license trade believe that the smoking ban has had a massive impact on business and the ban needs to be reviewed there are others who would like ban to be extended even further. For example a Buckinghamshire town is attempting to be the first to ban smoking on its streets. The campaign led by the local councilor is proposing a bylaw that would mean anyone lighting up in the street or public areas would be fined.

Duncan Chapman inn-fresco MD, which specialises in providing covered outdoor solutions for the on trade said ‘’ When the smoking ban came in, many Licensees saw an opportunity to create great outside areas that not only accommodated smokers but also enhanced the alfresco experience. This really helped their businesses. However, some did nothing or very cheap solutions. If the laws do get tighter to include no smoking in doorways or streets then clearly licensees will need to consider the impact this could have on their business. However an attractive outdoor area can be used by all customers providing an area where everyone can take advantage of good weather and enjoy alfresco drinking and dining. By offering a better outdoor area for customers owners have seen both their trade and revenue increase.’
He goes on to say ‘Whatever changes are made to the smoking laws licensees need to be ready but the most important thing is to create an inviting environment for customers whether they’re smokers or non-smokers. A good investment in your outdoor area will help customers to stay longer, enjoy their social time and return again and again. ‘’

the brief
The Star and Anchor in Ealing London, previously named the Baroque is a busy London
pub which had an unused outside area at the back of the pub. Having undergone a full
refurbishment the owners were looking to utilise their outdoor area and provide additional
seating and an attractive area that their customers could use for drinking and dining
outside. The pub also had a lot of functions and wanted to use the outside area for events
without having to worry about the weather. With spring just around the corner the owners
were also looking for a supplier that was able to recommend and install a solution to a tight
time scale.
solution
Following a call from the owner, Mike Doxey, one of inn-fresco’s sales representatives,
visited the site a week later. After a discussion with the owner to understand their
requirements Mike recommended a Timber framed Med. The Med has a PVC retractable
fabric roof and, designed in Italy it is innovative and stylish in look. As there were no wall
fixings the 7m x 9m Med was installed on goal posts and fitted with verti crystal blinds at
the sides to provide a truly all year round solution. The addition of heating and lighting has
also made it really flexible. The whole installation can be fully enclosed for chilly or wet
evenings or can be fully opened with the roof retracted back to let the sun shine in on a
summers day. For the pub it has meant that they have been able to add additional seating,
offer an alfresco experience and also plan for events both inside and outside without
having to worry about the weather.
