Three years on from the smoking ban, establishment owners that took the plunge and offered their customers better outdoor areas are continuing to enjoy the resulting increased revenue.
Duncan Chapman, Inn-Fresco MD, isn’t surprised.
‘After the ban, many bar owners invested in parasols, terrace covers and other measures – largely to accommodate the smokers at first.’, he commented.
‘Of course, if you create an attractive outdoor area, then all customers – smoking or not – will want to take advantage and enjoy alfresco drinking and dining while the weather’s nice. Plenty of people originally bought cheap or DIY solutions, but found these to be poor-quality, short-term answers.
With the British weather as unreliable as it can be it makes sense to invest in commercial quality products like terrace screening that’ll last for years, not months.’
With every Summer heralding another sporting event, even those as disappointing as this year’s World Cup, it’s crucial that licensees maximize their trade during these periods.
Setting themselves apart from the competition is critical and a great external space – complete with a big screen TV of course – can go a long way to providing the perfect outdoor environment for smokers and non-smokers to enjoy the football, cricket, Olympics or anything else you want to show.’
‘It’s not just about a simple awning, parasol or terrace screening”…
With the new government set to review the smoking ban, it’s possible that laws could get even tighter to include no smoking in doorways, parks and all vehicles.
Clearly the doorway rule could restrict some bars and clubs even further, and owners must consider the impact this could have on their business.
Duncan Chapman explains; ‘It’s not just about a simple awning, parasol or terrace screening. Over the last few years we’ve been at the forefront of an explosion in the number of new products that can provide the perfect solution for just about any business.
Our experience means we’re able to provide the most appropriate answer, from small and simple shelters to terrace screening and large-scale full developments.
We can help a business create an inviting environment that encourages customers, whether they’re smokers or non-smokers, to stay longer and enjoy their social time more. If it’s done right they’ll return again and again.’
